Five Lessons: Saborea Puerto Rico

Saborea Puerto Rico

The Saborea season is finally here!  Saborea Puerto Rico kicks off this next Thursday, April 9th, celebrating the best of Puerto Rican gastronomy and hospitality.  For the eighth consecutive year, this culinary extravaganza takes over San Juan, showcasing local chefs, restaurants, produce and artisanal products.

We’d like to think we are Saborea veteranos after three years of enjoying this festival, so we will be sharing our top five tips to enjoy the Saborea experience.  Got any of your own?  Make sure to share them in the comments section below.

1. Saborea Puerto Rico is best enjoyed with friends

Round up your corillo and get there early!  Secure one of the coveted lounge beds, a table in the middle of the Tasting Pavillion action, or a quieter spot overlooking the Atlantic ocean.  It’s always fun to trade tasting notes on the delicious bites, the featured wines from wonderful distributors (especially Ambrosia Fine Wines!) and spirits from the Serrallés family.  Tickets to Saborea Puerto Rico make also great gifts for the food people in your life.

2. Dress comfortably

Saborea Puerto Rico takes place on the beautiful oceanside Parque del Tercer Milenio – also known as El Escambrón.  While shade will be easy to come by in the Tasting Pavillion, the GE Monogram Demo Kitchen Theatre and other areas, it will still be very warm.  Leave the jeans and high heels at home!

3. Savor breaks between tastings and cooking demos

One of my favorite things to do during Saborea is to find a little nook, like this seating area in the artisanal products section, and rest my feet.  Grab an espresso or cortadito and enjoy the people watching and entertainment around you.  As the sun starts to set, the best spot to enjoy that last glass of wine or sangria is right in front of the Atlantic ocean.

4.  Plan to see your favorite chefs in the GE Monogram Demo Kitchen

On my must-see list? Local charcuterie master Pedro Alvarez, Food and Wine Best Chef Southeast nominee Jose Mendin, and the Sunday event closing with Chef Edgardo Noel.  Seriously, last year’s Cocinando y Cantando closing was so much fun, I can’t imagine missing it.  Check here the full list of talents showcasing their skills in the GE Monogram Demo Kitchen Theater.

Don’t be shy and head over to the front row!

5.  Branch out to more Saborea Puerto Rico events

Sure, the weekend showcase is the best known of the Saborea Puerto Rico events, but did you know that the action kicks off with not one but two tasting events?  Thursday evening poolside Bubbles and Bites reception features delicious appetizers paired with sparkling wines.  On Friday, twenty chefs will cook tableside on the Privileged Taste of Saborea, to be held at the Condado Plaza hotel.  Tickets for both events can be purchased here – MasterCard special pricing applies to all four weekend events! Saborea Puerto Rico is also a year-long celebration.  Watch out for their summer and winter parties for more delicious tastings from the island’s best chefs.

Stay tuned for more on the 2015 Saborea Puerto Rico weekend!  We’ll be sharing all the details later this week here in the blog and through our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram feeds.
