Puerto Rico Restaurant Week 2014

Puerto Rico Restaurant Week 2014

Foodies in the island, rejoice!  For the third consecutive year, Puerto Rico Restaurant Week will take over some of the best restaurants in San Juan.  In addition to their regular menu offerings, the participating restaurants will offer pre-fixe dinner menus for $28 or $38 with options for the appetizer, entrée and dessert.  For the first time – and especially exciting for me, now that I’m back working in the metro area – several venues will also offer pre-fixe lunch menus for $14 or $19.  Close your kitchens from Wednesday, May 14th to Tuesday, May 20th!

Saborea Puerto Rico 2014

Saborea Puerto Rico… it gets better every time!

Today we arrived at the Parque del Escambrón close to noon.  The day was beautiful!  On the Thursday press conference, it POURED and Friday was very rainy but there was nothing but blue skies today.  It was breezy at the Parque del Escambrón – the perfect weather to enjoy this culinary extravaganza. The High Food Holiday: Saborea Puerto Rico 2014

Looking for more Saborea 2014 coverage?  Click here for my Saturday recap and here for Sunday’s liveblog.

April and May are my “big” food months.  No offense to the traditional Thanksgiving-Christmas-Reyes trifecta, but when I think of the best months to celebrate Puerto Rican cuisine, spring time takes the cake.

Next weekend, the island’s premiere gastronomic event, Saborea Puerto Rico, will take place.  This culinary extravaganza is presented by the Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association (PRHTA) and it celebrates its seventh year.  Saborea Puerto Rico 2014 is a weekend-long feast of food and beverages that showcases the local hospitality industry while raising money for the PRHTA educational programs and scholarship fund.

Puerto Rico Restaurant Week

Puerto Rico Restaurant Week

I love May.   It feels like a happy month: we celebrate birthdays, mothers, the beginning of school summer vacation and more laid back summer traffic.  Starting last year, I look forward to May for another reason.  Puerto Rico joins the ranks of other major metropolitan hubs and celebrates its gastronomy through Puerto Rico Restaurant Week.  For two weeks starting on May 14th,  over 40 restaurants through the island will offer 3 course prix-fixe dinner menus for $26 or $36 (not including tax, gratuity or beverages). Saborea Puerto Rico 2013: Chef Jimmy Carey

One of the highlights of attending Saborea Puerto Rico is the opportunity to meet and greet some of the most talented chefs del patio and the ones travel to the island to be part of this event.  One of the chefs I’ve had the chance to meet in the 2012 edition was chef Jimmy Carey.  He was one of the chefs with the most active Facebook and Twitter presence during last year’s Saborea Puerto Rico, which helped us track each other at el Parque del Tercer Milenio.  Chef Jimmy currently owns and operates three locations of Jimmy’z Kitchen in the greater Miami area.  Do not be fooled by the name.  The minute you meet him, you forget he was born in Greenwich Village.  His warmth, sense of humor and 75% of his accent are distinctively boricuaRead More…

If Puerto Rico had an official food holiday, Saborea Puerto Rico would be it.  The sixth edition of Saborea Puerto Rico – A Culinary Extravaganza kicks off tonight, with its flagship event taking place on April 6th and 7th at the Parque del Tercer Milenio (el Escambrón).  This event is organized by the Puerto Rico Hotels and Tourism Association and sponsored by the City of San Juan, the Puerto Rico National Parks Company, and MasterCard among other entities.  Sixty-two chefs from Puerto Rico and the US will be participating in different activities during these four days of tastings, education, and fun. Food & Wine People’s Best New Chef: Gulf Coast Nominee – Raul Correa

Popcorn Soup Shot – Zest @ San Juan Water & Beach Club Hotel

Puerto Rico chefs and restaurants are having a wonderful run this year in terms of national recognition.  Chef José Enrique and his eponymous restaurant in Santurce and the new José Andrés venture Mi Casa in Dorado have garnered nominations from the James Beard Foundation.  In addition to those, FIVE out of the ten nominees for People’s Best New Chef: Gulf Coast from Food and Wine magazine have Puerto Rican roots or experience.  It is probably the most exciting time in gastronomy on the island. Puerto Rico Street Food Fest 2012

PR Street Food Fest 2012

The first Puerto Rico Street Food Festival is taking place this weekend on the Hiram Bithorn Stadium grounds.  This event – the first of its kind – gathered around thirty local food trucks and their fans for an afternoon/evening of tastings, music, and fun for the whole family.  I was looking forward to this event for some time now – there were a few trucks I already knew about and enjoyed, but there were others I was really looking forward to trying. Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian

“Voy subiendo, voy bajando…
Voy subiendo, voy bajando…
Tu vives como  yo vivo, yo vivo vacilando!”

(The Puerto Rican interpretation of vacilando is “goofing around”.  No one is undecided about having fun at la Calle San Sebastián!)
